How to Get Started?
Many years ago, I read an article
that claimed, in general, that
most people take more time to
prepare for their two week vacation than
they do for an interview that could be the
pivotal point of their lives. Having been a
hiring manager, I found there to be a lot of
truth to that statement. Many candidates,
with good résumés, failed the interview
process miserably, especially those who
did not even remember sending in their
application. As with a first date, making a
good impression is essential to reaching
the next step of the interview process.
The preparation for an interview begins
with the application documentation
which should be conveniently filed close
to the telephone for quick reference. Once
the candidate has been invited to the interview,
she should ask for a job description
as well as information on who will be
present at the interview. The candidate
should also ask for exact coordinates and
directions, especially if the company has
several branches. I worked with a client
who was so excited about having an interview
with Bombardier that he showed
up at the offices in Dorval rather than at
Head Office downtown.
The more information a candidate
can learn about a potential future
employer, the greater the chances
of making a good first impression
